Old carwash reborn as vet office, bank
By Will Shanley, Denver Post Staff Writer

A well-known corner on East Sixth Avenue will soon put a two-decade battle about the property's use behind it.

The Fire House Animal Hospital and a Washington Mutual bank will reside in the space formerly operated by the Fire House Car Wash at East Sixth and Corona Street.

The 4,500-square-foot veterinary office opens Oct. 18, and the bank will open later.

"Locally, people know the name Fire House," said veterinary hospital owner Jed Rogers, whose office will employ 25 people. "That's why we decided to stay in line with the trend and keep the name."

The building was vacant for nearly three years after zoning violations forced the car wash to shut its doors in late 2001. Neighbors had complained about noise and traffic problems.

But neighbors didn't bark about the veterinary office and bank.

"We are delighted with the tenants the owner has found," said Joseph Halpern, who lives near the property.

Rogers, a native of Houston, took out a $1 million loan to renovate and equip the animal hospital. The facility will provide general and preventive care but won't offer overnight or emergency services.

"(The neighbors) like the idea of having a vet hospital in the area," Rogers said.
